FAQs

Scoliosis describes a lateral curve of the spine, including some vertebral rotation. Although most curves are small, some can be progressive and lead to spinal and postural deformities and sometimes pain in later life.
There are genetic risk factors for scoliosis, but there are no confirmed cause of scoliosis development. Poor posture, carrying backpacks, and choice of mattress have not been shown to cause nor influence scoliosis.

SCREENING

Scoliosis often develops rapidly in pre-adolescence or adolescence. The condition is usually painless, so there may be no symptoms to indicate a developing scoliosis. Pre-teens and teens often favor loose clothing which may conceal visual indications of a scoliosis.
Girls should be first checked around 10-12 years old. Boys should be first checked around 11-13 years old. Earlier detection and intervention has been shown to lead to better long term outcomes for the patient.
Ideally a scoliometer should be used to measure the Angle of Trunk Rotation (ATR). A trained Health Professional can administer a scoliosis screening, looking for clinical indication of scoliosis in the patient’s posture. If signs are detected, further investigation including X-Ray imaging may be recommended to confirm their findings.

PREVENTION AND TREATMENT
There is no known way to prevent a scoliosis from developing. The best known ways to prevent a scoliosis from worsening are early detection and prompt treatment.
Complementary treatment may play an important role though in addressing the ongoing health needs of a patient with scoliosis, however there are limitations. These approaches may give pain relief, improve movement and help general posture and strength. These treatments should be encouraged if they help an individual patient deal with specific pain, posture or mobility issues.
Standard physical therapy and exercises such as swimming or yoga do not help prevent, correct, nor stop the progression of scoliosis. However, there are special exercise and rehabilitation programs which have been designed to address the scoliosis curve and these have shown to be very effective in certain cases. When specialized scoliosis rehabilitation and exercise programs have been used in conjunction with bracing it has improved the results of hard bracing.

Learn more about the role of exercise and rehabilitation in scoliosis treatment: What is SEAS?
No. However, it is imperative to have children checked regularly if a parent or family member has scoliosis.
If a scoliosis is confirmed on X-Ray, an MRI may be recommended to rule out rare complications. For mild curves, observation or scoliosis rehabilitation may be indicated. For moderate curves, scoliosis bracing may be recommended. For severe curves, a surgical consultation is often necessary.

Do you know what spina bifida means? It occurs when the spinal cord and vertebrae fail to develop properly in the womb. Most people that have spina bifida will have continence issues. It is a congenital disability in which a person must manually empty his or her bladder. This inability to urinate at-will also leads to life-threatening damage to the kidney. Regenerative Medicine is attempting to make life easier and is working to improve the quality of life for several patients. Several children and teenagers have received urinary bladders grown from their cells, the first-ever transplant of a laboratory-grown organ placed into a human.people all over the world.

Tissue engineering and biomaterials

Some diseases are so destructive that the only cure is to give patients entirely new organs. The goal is to maintain the body in such a way that there will be no need to replace whole organs. Organ donation has increased over the years and saves lives. If you or your loved one needs an organ, you will be waiting for years to find a suitable donor. You or your loved one may receive an organ from another donor, but the body may reject it. The best example of tissue engineering is the successful creation of heart valves from human cells that prevents a patient from undergoing a heart transplant.

Cellular therapy

Stem cells are a natural mechanism for healing tissues that are diseased, damaged, or destroyed due to injury or disease. Stem cells which are abundant in every person can help repair the damaged parts of the body. There are adult stem cells that are located throughout the body, especially in the adipose tissue. Additionally, the umbilical cord of a new-born baby, that is usually discarded, contains blood with many stem cells. The blood can be stored in blood banks or donated to those in need.

Clinical translation

Regenerative medicine is making significant progress each day. Clinical translation is a promising therapy that is not widely used in present times. It uses healthy cells from the patient’s own body as a cure. It is a form of regenerative medicine that can cure diabetes, stroke, heart disease, and several other severe health conditions.
